Firm fined for illegally spreading asbestos One of the biggest suppliers of asbestos in the UK illegally transported and spread the deadly material from 2012 to 2014. The firm: Pagnell Asbestos, a waste disposal business. It made at least 449 trips to sites where rubbish containing asbestos was brought onto its premises in Kidsgrove. The company mixed the asbestos with other waste and then sorted it on to its site at Winghay Close, Kidsgrove. The asbestos disposal Kidsgrove was particularly challenging.
The company carried out the asbestos removal work with a mobile plant at Winghay Close, Kidsgrove. It then took the waste to the Peel Street site where it was wetted to prevent airborne fibres escaping into the air. The waste was then left for several months before being disposed of responsibly at Heywood Distribution Park. The Environment Agency is taking action against Kidsgrove businessman and waste contractor David Haworth for his failure to deal with asbestos waste lawfully at three of his sites.
The sites, in Kidsgrove Staffordshire and Longbridge Manchester, were being used for secure storage of asbestos prior to its disposal. The court was told that during this period, Kidsgrove had no permit authorising it to receive asbestos waste or to transport it. The judge heard that both Longbridge Hayes Industrial Estate and the Heywood Distribution Park also did not have any relevant permits. The Envoke hazardous waste treatment facility, on which development started in 2011, will concentrate on disposing of asbestos products and other construction and demolition waste.
in 2013 Amey was contracted to manage waste at three facilities owned by Asbestos Disposal Kidsgrove in Longbridge, Staffordshire, Kidsgrove and Heywood. During this contract period it became apparent that waste treatment procedures were not being followed correctly as required by the permit issued by the Environment Agency for each site. We are determined to ensure that companies which make errors of this nature are held to account and that these failures do not go unnoticed. No asbestos will accepted at this site on day of collection areas marked with red lines.
Asbestos Disposal Kidsgrove of Kidsgrove, Staffordshire is being fined £20,000 and ordered to pay costs of £34,867 after pleading guilty to three charges relating to serious breaches of its environmental permits at sites in Bury and Staffordshire. The sites included the Heywood Distribution Park near Bury where asbestos was found littered at numerous locations around the site during July 2013 inspections by Environment Agency officers. Following a tipoff, the Environment Agency officers conducted an inspection of Peel Street in October 2013 which revealed large piles of asbestos waste outside the premises.
