View more detailsThe GCSE Curriculum Education Plans that have resulted from this funding focus on asbestos disposal and what is done with it at the Facility. They have been developed to reflect the IET and IMechE Engineering Principles—these are fundamental engineering concepts that include an understanding of energy, materials, machines, structures and the environment. It is hoped that the plans will help students to become aware of a variety of careers available in the engineering sector. This will not only widen their employment opportunities but also encourage them to pursue a career in an area they may previously not have considered.

The Gloucestershire Energy From Waste Facility (EfW) received a grant from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to develop GCSE Curriculum Education Plans for the benefit of students in and around Gloucestershire. The plans were developed as part of a joint initiative entitled, 'Curriculum inspired by engineering'. The IET and IMechE, in partnership with the Gloucestershire County Council and the Asbestos Advisory Group, funded an education programme for the benefit of students in socially deprived areas of Gloucestershire.
The plans will be shared with schools, colleges and SoS groups throughout the county and will also be available on the Energy from Waste Facility's website. Now schools in and around Gloucestershire can use the GCSE Curriculum Education Plan to deliver the content, activities and resources needed to educate students in both Science and Maths on the disposal of waste materials, exploration into energy recovery from waste and specifically, the generation of energy through incineration.
The Gloucestershire CEP on thermal treatment of asbestos was developed to give teachers a visual demonstration of the thermal processing of asbestos and the disposal into an engineered landfill. It has been developed by engineering lecturers from Stonehouse Collage in consultation with colleagues at Gloucester City College and local school teachers. The design incorporates a mobile craned tower with working platform, hand held Asbestos identification monitors and the bunker which holds the fuel for the furnace and provides safety barriers for crane operation.
The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility (GEFfW), Bristol, was developed by Asbestos Disposal Stonehouse and started operations in July 2008. The facility receives nonhazardous household and commercial waste which is processed to produce electrical energy. The facility receives around 320 tonnes of domestic municipal solid waste each day, or about 100 per cent of the household waste recycled within an urban area approximately the same size as Herefordshire. . The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility (GEWF) in Gloucester provides an ideal location for learning about the issues surrounding waste management.
With the opening of the £350 million facility in June 2014, Stonehouse inhouse Education and Visitor Service received a new challenge to develop a resource that was suitable for both GCSE Curriculum and A Level students. The IET in partnership with the IMechE and funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) developed a GCSE Curriculum Education Plan (CEP) for the benefit of students in and around Gloucestershire who are studying this success.
