This will include discussions on potential arrangements for asbestos testing in Woolwich which was carried out by Braithwaite Environmental at a cost to the Ministry of Justice in 2001.

These discussions will be ongoing as we move towards a unified court service in Greater London. In advance of any 2004based transfer of functions to the courts authority, which will involve a full review of local court provision across London, and before any proposals are made, the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs has consulted widely with local magistrates'courts associations across London, including the Greater London Magistrates'Court Association. The Department wishes to work in close partnership with all interested persons and organisations as part of this process, and is therefore discussing appropriate arrangements for next year with them.
To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Department for Constitutional Affairs if he will take steps (a) to ensure that asbestos is not present in (i) the ceilings and walls of the Magistrates'Court in Woolwich, southeast London and (ii) adjacent buildings and (b) to ensure that all judges, magistrates, court staff, witnesses and defendants visiting the court are made aware that there has been no asbestos remediation work in the area. I have had several discussions with representatives of the Greater London Magistrates'Court Association about court provision across London in advance of the formation of the unified courts authority in 2004.
The discussions have focused on the possible provision of additional courts for fasttrack cases, and in particular for antisocial behaviour cases. In July 2001, the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Group looked into the issue of court provision in London. On 19 November 2001, the Lord Chancellor proposed to merge Woolwich and Greenwich with South London and Wandsworth. The Department is satisfied that this is the most effective way of ensuring an adequate court service for those areas.
He (Nick Hawkins) Has had no discussions with representatives of the Greater London Magistrates'Court Association about court provision across London in advance of the formation of the unified courts authority in 2004. He plans to liaise with organisations and government departments which represent users of the criminal and civil justice system to ensure their views are taken into account when decisions are made on how best to deal with a reduction in courts and judges to be brought about as a result of the Courts Bill.
He also plans to ask the membership of the united court authority, who will collectively determine the future shape and location of provision. My right hon. Friend the President of the Queen's Bench Division has made clear that continuing confidence in the service will be a key priority for the unified courts authority and he will be discussing this regularly with officials of all the courts involved. The Lord Chancellor has also made clear his intention to pursue constructive discussions with all those concerned with court provision throughout London.
